Design Process

Creating a poster involves several key steps to ensure that it effectively communicates its message and engages the audience. I divided it up to roughly 5 parts

  • Define and Identify Target Audience

  • Prioritize and Gather Information

  • Create Design Layout

  • Incorporate Visual Elements

  • Iteration

  • Finalize

Define

Wonderfruit is an annual event that brings together people from all over the world to celebrate art, culture, music, and nature in a spectacular setting. It offers attendees a diverse range of experiences. At Wonderfruit, you can immerse yourself in a vibrant atmosphere filled with live musical performances spanning various genres, from electronic and indie to world music. You'll encounter mesmerizing art installations and architectural wonders that ignite your imagination and provoke thought.

Wonderfruit's target audience is broad, encompassing a diverse mix of individuals. The festival appeals to music enthusiasts seeking new sounds, art and culture lovers interested in immersive experiences, wellness enthusiasts attracted to yoga and holistic activities, and families looking for unique experiences together.

Gather / Prioritize information

I conducted comprehensive research to gather more information about Wonderfruit. This involved thoroughly reviewing their website to understand their mission, values, and overall vibe. I also watched video clips of past events to get a sense of the activities and atmosphere. To gain insights into attendees' perspectives, I read people's reflections and comments to understand their experiences and what they valued most about the event. Additionally, I analyzed past years' posters to identify the key information they typically displayed and how they visually represented the event. Based on this thorough research, I have decided to include the following key elements on the poster:

  • Event Name

  • Date

  • Location

  • Slogan

  • QR code for RSVP

  • Brief introduction

  • Lineup

I decided to prioritize the date, name, and location on the poster for Wonderfruit. These details are essential for attendees to know when and where the event is taking place, ensuring they can plan their attendance accordingly. Highlighting the event's name creates a strong branding presence, helping to establish recognition and recall among the audience.

Design Layout
Phase 1 - Paper Sketch

I've divided the project into three phases, starting with paper sketches where I quickly jot down some design concepts that come to mind. These sketches serve as initial blueprints for further exploration and development.

Design Layout
Phase 2 - Digital Layout in Black and White

I began exploring digital layouts using only black and white. This method enables me to concentrate only on the essential elements of design, including composition, contrast, and hierarchy, free from the influence of color distractions.  I moved forward with three designs out of the 10 paper sketches and created two design layouts for each.

Incorporate Visual Elements

I selected a couple of images specifically for the Wonderfruit poster as they capture the event's vibrant and lively atmosphere. These pictures showcase the energy and excitement of Wonderfruit while conveying the essence of its unique experience.

I then chose the color scheme based on these images. The images feature a range of bright and lively colors, including vibrant purple, blues, and oranges, which inspired the overall color palette for the poster. This color scheme not only complements the images but also helps to convey the fun and dynamic nature of Wonderfruit, further enhancing its appeal to the target audience.

Iteration

I advanced with two design sketches, refining each through a couple of iterations. To create the designs, I utilized a mix of tools: InDesign for curved text and layout, Adobe Illustrator for logo design, and Figma for sizing adjustments and assembling all components.

Reflection

Through my Wonderfruit poster graphic design project, I've learned the importance of audience-centered design, visual storytelling, and effective information hierarchy. Selecting impactful images, prioritizing key information, and experimenting with layout and typography have been key lessons. This project has enhanced my understanding of graphic design principles and their practical application.
